Much of my career has involved managing projects for people who wanted a product made.
Often that started with a customer who needed a plastic part and came to the manufacturer where I worked. The work was to help take that need forward: understand it, develop it, work through the technical issues, and bring the pieces together toward production.
Other projects involved more extensive product development, specialized packaging, military-related products, tooling, testing, automation, or plant infrastructure.
Across those projects, the important skill was connecting the specialties. An engineering decision affects tooling. Tooling affects production. Testing changes the design. Timing and budget influence the choices available.

Bring the customer, engineering, tooling, suppliers, production, and other contributors into a shared understanding of the work and the decisions ahead.
Manage decisions & changes
Identify what needs to be decided, what information is missing, and what changes affect cost, timing, or the next step. Keep the reasoning with the project.
Plan prototypes & tests
Define what each prototype or evaluation needs to demonstrate. Use the result to guide the next decision rather than building without a clear learning objective.
Connect development to production
Consider materials, molds, secondary operations, assembly, inspection, equipment, and the information the production team will need.
Keep the commercial goal in view
Understand whether the customer is developing a part, launching a business, selling a finished product, exploring retail, or considering licensing. The intended destination changes the work.

I’ve encountered many people trying to navigate product development for the first time.
Questions about companies, liability, patents, funding, and selling often arise alongside technical decisions. I’m familiar with those conversations and with the importance of finding the right help.
I don’t present myself as the final authority in every specialty. My contribution is to help identify the questions, organize the work, and point the project toward appropriate information and people.

Prepare the work

Someone still needs to judge what matters, recognize a weak assumption, and decide when more evidence or specialist input is needed.

My approach uses ongoing roles for continuity and temporary helpers for bounded assignments. The helper gets a complete brief; the result is reviewed and the important information returns to the project record.
That is a management problem as much as a technical one. Clear instructions and good handoffs help prevent the same question being rediscovered or a critical detail being left behind.
